Colonel Albert Edward SCOTHERN CMG DSO MA - Headmaster of Redditch Secondary School and Redditch County High School 1920-1947
Remembering the Colonel, headmaster of the grammar school - which I later attended - for 27 years, who died on 20th March 1970. He fought in World War I, was injured by enemy fire, but later returned to the front line. In addition to being Mentioned in Dispatches on 6 occasions, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) for his leadership in combat. Following the end of the war, he was appointed as a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG). Before the war, he became an Oxford Blue, playing football for the university, later becoming an England International footballer.
He played for Oxford City for 9 seasons and was a member of its 1904 FA Amateur Cup winning team.
He was also selected as a member of the Great Britain football squad for the 1908 Olympic Games.
The Colonel died in 1970 and is buried at St Leonard's Church, Beoley, Redditch.
A real character, who has a chapter dedicated to him in my book, "The Last School Bell". RIP.
